Best Dusting Techniques & Products to Improve Your IAQ

Dust is something we must all contend with, and pet owners can have it worst of all. Such buildup is a serious concern that not only lowers indoor air quality but can exacerbate asthma and other breathing conditions. The good news is that there are techniques and products that can make a big difference.

Dust on a Consistent Basis

B&B Heating & Air Conditioning in Grove, Miami, Vinita and the surrounding areas has been providing professional IAQ advice for more than 30 years. We recommend an extensive dusting at least once a week and spot-dusting as required. Microfiber is generally recommended since it works wonders with dust and can be machine-washed over and over again. Experts also recommend a microfiber duster with an extendable handle so that you can easily reach ceilings, crown molding, ceiling fans, curtain tops and so forth.

Vacuum Regularly Too

Rooms should be dusted top to bottom followed by vacuuming of all carpets and upholstery. Hard surfaces should be swept with a dust-trapping solution, such as a Swiffer. IAQ experts recommend using HEPA vacuum bags because they trap dust very well. Although you may only perform a deep dusting once a week, it is never a bad idea to vacuum carpets three or more times a week.

Bolster Your Heating and Cooling

Ensure that your home has adequate mechanical ventilation and not too much natural ventilation. Your air ducts should be professionally cleaned every three years or so to eliminate the dust that collects within. A whole-home dehumidifier not only makes your AC run more effectively but helps avoid an environment in which contaminants thrive and thus increase how much dust is created.
